Jason Gets On The
Fast Track To A Job
A TEENAGER has realised his ambition of being offered an apprenticeship
just weeks after signing up with a Burton recruitment agency. Bosses
at Foston-based Truma Ltd were so impressed with temporary worker
Jason Merrick that they offered him both permanent employment and
an apprenticeship to become a gas service engineer.
The 18-year-old, of Winshill, will begin his apprenticeship, which
will result in a qualification as a CORGI-registered gas engineer,
on January 2. However, the former Abbot Beyne School pupil walked
into recruitment agency Fasttrack Personnel's offices in High Street,
Burton, purely by chance after noticing a sign outside the premises
calling for warehouse operatives while walking into the town centre.
After signing up with the agency, he was offered temporary work
at Truma, which manufactures specialist heaters and accessories
for caravans, mobile homes, horseboxes and boats. Bosses at the
firm, which relocated from Burton to Dove Valley Park, Foston, earlier
this year, were so impressed with Mr Merrick, whose duties included
open-ended gas testing, that they offered him a permanent position
which he had been hoping for < and an opportunity to take an
apprenticeship.
Mr Merrick told Business Monthly: "I'm very proud of myself.
I was looking for an apprenticeship.”
Recruitment consultant Kam Kaur, of Fasttrack, who helped put Mr
Merrick in touch with Truma, spoke of the job satisfaction gained
from the 18-year-old's success. She said: “It gets the
message over to other people who come to our agency that they don't
just have to be temporary, there's a chance to go further. People
can be sceptical about agencies, but there are some really capable
people coming through.”
Fasttrack managing director Jay Dhillon said: “Everyone
is a winner in this case. That's the way we work at the agency,
with all three parties, and we take time to speak to everyone who
comes through the door to help them find the right career path.”
